UM FOCUSING ON HIGH-IMPACT RESEARCH TO COMPETE GLOBALLY
KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) - In ensuring excellence and the ability to compete at the global level, Universiti Malaya (UM) is directing its focus on high-impact research.
UM vice-chancellor Dr Ghauth Jasmon said the Academic Icon Headhunting Unit was established to expedite the process of finding the academics who conduct high-impact research.
"The icon-status academics will head the high-quality research with the existing UM staff, as well as establish international networking," he said during the university's 50th convocation ceremony, here, on Monday.
He said UM was committed to competing internationally and its main mission was to be ranked among the 100 top universities in the world by 2015.
He added that the university was going through a transformation process in academics, human resource and finance to ensure its staff continue to excel.
"Besides obtaining more autonomy, the university wants to be more
financially independent and not continue to rely on government funds."
He said university transformations had taken place 25 years ago in Thailand, 15 years ago in China, 10 years ago in Indonesia and eight years ago in Taiwan.
"UM cannot lag behind and there is no other choice but to transform for excellence," he said.
The convocation ceremony was officiated by the Sultan of Perak Sultan Azlan Shah, who is also UM chancellor.
A total of 6,638 graduands receive their scrolls for the doctorate (309), master's (1,931) and bachelor's (4,231) degree, and diplomas (167) during the six-day convocation which ends on Oct 8.
