Iranian MP urges UNICEF to investigate children’s conditions in Israeli prisons

TEHRAN, Oct.4 (MNA)-- MP Zohre Elahian called on UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund ) to investigate the inhuman conditions of the children being kept in the prisons of the Zionist regime.

Elahian, who is the chairperson of the Majlis Human Rights Committee, made the remarks in a recent letter sent to Executive Director of UNICEF Anthony Lake.

The text of the letter was released on Monday.

In her letter, Elahian said that children need extra support, but the cases of human rights violations in the occupied Palestinian territories is on the rise.

She also wrote that the Geneva-based Defense for Children International and an Israeli organization which observes the situation in Palestine have recently published reports on the systematic abuse of the Palestinian children being imprisoned in Israeli prisons.

Elsewhere in her letter, Elahian said that torturing and arbitrary arrests of children blatantly violate the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which was adopted on November 20, 1989.

She also stated that according to reports, 93 percent of 835 Palestinians who were below seventeen years of age were arrested and sentenced to imprisonment in 2005 and 2010.

In conclusion, she said that UNICEF officials are expected to inspect Israeli prisons and investigate the situation of children there and prevent the violation of human rights by Israelis.
