MALAYSIA TO SEEK GLOBAL MARKET FOR LOCAL PRODUCTIONS AT MIPCOM 2011

CANNES, Oct 4 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is taking the local creative industry to the international front by seeking the cooperation of foreign production companies and promoting Malaysian productions in the global market.

Information, Communication and Culture Ministry Secretary-General Kamaruddin Siaraf said the time had come for Malaysia not to be overly dependent on buying foreign creative content.

Instead, he wanted local creative players, including television stations, to sell their 'products' in the international market.

"The focus now is to produce quality films, in cooperation with leading foreign producers, to gain intellectual property rights in the world market.

"The government, through the Malaysian National Film Development Corporation (Finas), Multimedia Development Corporation (MDEC) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) would facilitate such efforts," he told Bernama here on Monday.

Kamaruddin, who is heading a Malaysian delegation to the World Audio and Visual Trade Exhibition 2011 (MIPCOM 2011), was speaking after a meeting with Reed MIDEM president Paul Zilk, who is also the event organiser.

In the meeting with Singapore's Media Development Authority (MDA) chief executive officer Aubeck Kam, he said efforts to set up an MDEC-initiated bilateral agreement between the two countries would proceed.

Through the bilateral pact, Malaysian and Singaporean companies could carry out joint productions in animation, drama, fiction, documentary and other multimedia content, which would be assisted by both governments.

The discussion on the agreement would be continued with Singapore during the three-day Asia Television Forum beginning Dec 7, and also during the visit of senior MDA officers to Malaysia early next year.

In the meeting, Kamaruddin urged Singaporean companies to invest in the Johor Iskandar development zone, especially in the creative industry, along the line of the Pinewood Studio Iskandar project which was expected to be operational by 2013.

On cooperation with the Australian creative industry, he said the government was now in the final discussion to set up a 'Co-production Treaty' and hoped it would be signed by year-end.

The agreement would be an umbrella for creative productions between the two countries.

In his meeting with the Reed MIDEM president, Kamaruddin urged Zilk to consider popularising Malaysia as a country of focus in the coming MIPCOM.

Each year, MIPCOM introduces a specific country in the creative industry to be highlighted as the country of focus.

This year, Russia has been chosen as the country of focus and it directly popularises the country through creative industry content.

For that purpose, he had asked Finas to study the possibility of such cooperation.

MIPCOM, which is held annually in Cannes, France takes place from Oct 3 to 6. It is a leading world marketing event for the film and entertainment industry.

Malaysia's participation in MIPCOM has increased over the years, with 75 companies taking part this year.

Of the total, more than 45 companies are marketing productions of film, animation, drama series and other products of intellectual property right.
