BE MORE AWARE OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE NEEDS, SMEs URGED
PETALING JAYA (Selangor, Malaysia), Oct 4 (Bernama) -- Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) mustbe more aware of all aspects of international trade, says the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI).
Strategic Trade Controller Mohamed Shahabar Abdul Kareem said SMEs currently lack knowledge of export trade as underlined in the Strategic Trade Act (STA) 2010.
"Currently, there are nearly 300 companies registered under the STA but there are more that are still unaware of this act. We are hoping that more and more SMEs will start registering in the future," he told reporters after a luncheon talk on the implementation of the STA 2010 here on Tuesday.
He said MITI, through this act, is trying to resolve this issue with related organisations such as SME Corp, but the issue is going to take some time to resolve.
"Even in the US, after 50 years of export controls, there are still
companies there that don't know about this," he said.
Shahabar said the main problem SMEs face regarding export is that they do not fully understand the products they are going to export.
"They should seek assistance. Here we provide technical assistance to determine whether the product is advantageous to be exported or not," he said, adding that there would be some fees required to pay for the testing agencies.
"Until they come to us, we may have a problem to assist them because there are so many SMEs, it is very difficult to identify their business, what they produce and the manufacturing processes they used, so it's going to be a big challenge for us," he added.
The STA 2010 [Act 708] controls the export, transshipment, transit and brokering of strategic items and technology, including arms and related material, as well as activities that will or may facilitate the design, development and production of weapons of mass destruction and their delivery system.
