Bahraini FM met Iran`s foreign minister to explain situation in kingdom: Iranian spokesman
TEHRAN, Oct. 5 (MNA) - Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ramin Mehmanparast said on Tuesday that the Bahraini foreign minister had held a meeting with the Iranian foreign minister Ali Akbar Salehi to explain the situation in the kingdom.
Mehmanparast made the remarks during his weekly press briefing on Tuesday in reference to the fact that Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi came under criticism after he held a meeting with Bahrain Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa in New York on September 26.
“Bahraini officials had been looking for an opportunity to reach our officials to explain the situation of their country, and a meeting was held between Iranian and Bahraini foreign ministers on the sidelines of the session of the United Nations General Assembly at the request of the Bahraini foreign minister, and what we believe in regarding Bahrain was discussed during the meeting,” Mehmanparast stated.
However, Khalid, in an interview with the London-based Arabic daily Asharq Alawsat published on September 29, stated that both sides had agreed to hold a meeting and neither him nor Salehi had requested the meeting.
Mehmanparast added, “Our country’s policy on Bahrain is quite clear, and we support the people’s aspirations and their legitimate demands. And our advice is that peace be brought back to the country and public demands be fulfilled, and we advise governments to listen to the demands of their people.”
