Iran will push ahead with 20% enrichment: Iran`s FM spokesman
TEHRAN, Oct.5(MNA) - In his weekly press briefing on Tuesday , Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ramin Mehmanparast was asked to comment on the fact that the United States has questioned Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s proposal made in New York on September 22, in which he said Tehran would stop producing 20 percent enriched uranium if it is guaranteed fuel for the Tehran research reactor, which produces radioisotopes for cancer treatment.
According to Agence France-Presse, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said on Friday, “If Iran has a serious proposal to put forward, it has to put it forward to the (International Atomic Energy Agency).”
Mehmanparast said that producing uranium enriched to a purity level of 20 percent is not economically viable for Iran, but Iran will continue the enrichment process until the Tehran research reactor’s need for fuel is met.
He added that the need will be met when Iran starts producing plate type nuclear fuel for the Tehran research reactor.
