D-8 sets $200b trade target in 5 years

ANKARA, Oct.5(MNA) — The second Developing Eight Countries (D-8) Ministerial Meeting on Industry, was inaugurated on Tuesday, in Istanbul, Turkey, with setting the value of trade among member states at 200 billion dollars within five years.

In the three-day meeting, industry ministers, experts and entrepreneurs of the member countries which include Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey, will negotiate over expanding the industrial cooperation.

“The value of trade among the D-8 countries stood at 66 billion dollars in 2009, which increased to 100 billion dollars in 2010”, Turkish Minister of Science, Industry and Technology, Nihat Ergun, told reports before the inauguration of the meeting, IRNA reported.

Iran’s minister of industry, mine and trade, Mehdi Ghazanfari, has attended the meeting.

As a result of the “5th Meeting of D-8 Working Group on Industrial Cooperation” and “1st Ministerial Meeting on Industry” organized in Iran last year, it was decided to organize the “2nd Ministerial Meeting” and the “6th Meeting of the Working Group” in Istanbul on 4-6 October 2011.

Iran will deliver the secretary general position of the meeting to Turkey.

The group of D-8 countries officially started its activities in 1997 with the aim of developing cooperation among member countries. The major economic objectives of D-8 are promoting the position of member countries in the world economy, giving variety and provision of new opportunities in commercial relations, increasing the participation of member countries in international decision-making, and raising the level of living standards.
