GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO SCRUTINISE LIST OF FOOD COUPON RECIPIENTS
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 (Bernama) -- The government will have to scrutinise the list of poor people for the food coupon programme before the initiative can be implemented to ensure it accurately represents the group eligible for assistance, the Lower House of Parliament was told on Thursday.
Deputy Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Rohani Abdul Karim said based on the experience in implementing the people's rice subsidy programme (Subur) previously, there were complaints about names which should not be in the list.
"I hope that all quarters, irrespective of whether they are from the Barisan Nasional or opposition parties, can assist in updating the list.
"The proposal for the food coupon will be given consideration but we need to vet it further," she said in reply to a supplementary question from member of parliament Johari Abdul (PKR-Sungai Petani).
She also said that the proposal to make the price-control campaign during festive seasons an all-year round programme should take into account the interest of manufacturers.
She called on consumers to exercise prudence and make price comparisons so as not to spend beyond their means.
"Please utilise the 1Pengguna portal to find shops offering the best price. There are supermarkets and hypermarkets offering lower prices," she said.
Earlier when replying to the original question from MP Abd Rahman Bakri (BN-Sabak Bernam) on the government's effort to assist the lower income group to cope with rising costs, Rohani said the initiatives included imposing price control on basic essentials such as sugar, flour and cooking oil as well as creating the 1Malaysia shop and organising price reduction programme in collaboration with supermarket and hypermarket operators.
"The Cabinet Committee on Supplies and Prices chaired by the deputy prime minister has also been set up to identify mechanisms to tackle supply disruptions and price increases for essential goods," she said.
