‘Afghan drug production has gone up greatly since U.S. invasion’

TEHRAN, Oct.8 (MNA) – The deputy head of the Iranian mission to the United Nations said the production of illicit drugs in Afghanistan has remarkably increased since foreign forces spearheaded by the United States invaded the country.

Es’haq Ale-Habib made the remarks on Thursday in an address to the Social, Humanitarian Cultural Affairs Committee of the UN General Assembly.

He pointed to the long border between Iran and Afghanistan and said according to statistics released by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Afghanistan is the main producer of illicit drugs, and Iran has also been used as the main conduit for smuggling drugs from Afghanistan to drug kingpins in Europe.

In response, the Islamic Republic has proved its determination to seal its borders and prevent the transit of illicit drugs by losing thousands of its military and police forces and spending millions of dollars, he explained.

He went on to say that the Islamic Republic has also promoted regional cooperation with the member countries of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) on this matter.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Ale-Habib said unfortunately, despite the presence of the Western coalition troops in Afghanistan after the overthrow of the Taliban, the grave problem not only has not been resolved but the production of drugs has drastically increased in the country.

In conclusion, he called the traffic of illicit drugs a global problem and reiterated that Iran is determined to encounter the problem and is ready to cooperate with any country to resolve it.
