Iran’s Paykan to compete in FIVB Club World Championships
TEHRAN, Oct.8 (MNA) -- Paykan will play Poland’s KS Jastrzebski Wegiel on Saturday in Doha, Qatar, in its opening match of the 2011 FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship.
The last year’s bronze medalist has been drawn in Pool A alongside Russia’s Zenit Kazan, Poland’s KS Jastrzebski Wegiel and Trinity Western University Spartans from Canada.
Pool B consists of Trentino Diatec from Italy, Qatari Al-Arabi, Brazilian Sesi Sao Paulo and Al-Ahly from Egypt.
“Paykan has a difficult job in the event since the team has been drawn with powerful teams such as Russian and Polish teams. We finished in the third place in the previous edition (of the tournament) but our team has been changed quite a bit in the current edition,” Paykan coach Peyman Akbari said.
The seventh edition of the FIVB Club World Championships will take place from October 8 to 14.
The FIVB Club World Championship is a volleyball competition contested between the champion clubs from continental confederations. The competition first took place in Parma, Italy in 1989.
Trentino Diatec is the competition’s most successful team with six trophies.
