250 tons of narcotics seized in Iran in 6 months: Iran`s police chief
TEHRAN, Oct. 11 (MNA) -- Police chief announced that about 250 tons of illicit drugs have been seized during the first half of the current Iranian calendar year, which started March 21, 2011.
Brigadier General Esmaeil Ahmadi-Moqaddam made the remarks on Monday during a meeting with a number of ambassadors and chargés d'affaires of foreign countries to Tehran and officials of international organizations based in Iran.
He also said that a large quantity of illicit drugs have been seized in the country’s eastern provinces that border Afghanistan and Pakistan.
He added that police have taken many measures to prevent the traffic of illicit drugs across eastern borders and managed to significantly reduce drug smuggling.
In addition, he expressed regret about a severalfold increase in drug production in Afghanistan over the past few years.
In April, Iran was re-elected as a member of the International Narcotics Control Board by the United Nations Economic and Social Council for another five-year term.
According to the UN, Iran ranks first among all countries in the world in shutting down drug routes into its territory.
With a 900-kilometer (560-mile) border with Afghanistan, Iran has been used as the main conduit for smuggling illicit drugs from its neighbor to drug kingpins in Europe.
In response, Iran has spent over $700 million to seal its borders and prevent the transit of illicit drugs destined for European, Middle Eastern, and Central Asian countries.
