Basijis will help Iran become an intl. power : Supreme Leader

KERMANSHAH, Oct. 15 (MNA) -- Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei delivered an address to thousands of Basij members at a gathering in the western Iranian city of Kermanshah on Friday, in which he said that the Iranian nation will become a powerful country in the international arena with the help of its basijis.

The Leader emphasized the need to promote the basiji culture in the country, adding that if there is any obstacle in the way of the promotion of the basiji culture, it should be removed by the relevant officials.

Ayatollah Khamenei also noted that the late Imam Khomeini, the Founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, once said, “If a country has 20 million people ready to defend (the country)… that country will be invincible.”

The Leader was referring to the fact that Imam Khomeini ordered the establishment of a 20-million-strong Basij force in 1979 in order to safeguard the Islamic Revolution.

Ayatollah Khamenei also said that the Basij volunteer forces shoulder a great responsibility to defend Islamic principles, adding that the Basij will stand up to any deviation in the movement of the Islamic system toward the realization of the causes of the Islamic Revolution.

However, this does not mean that “the entire society should be militarized,” rather it means that everyone should be ready to defend the country, he added.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Leader envisioned a bright future for the country and criticized the people who have closed their eyes to the country’s achievements.
The Leader also met with veterans and families of martyrs of the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war on Thursday and praised them for the tremendous sacrifices they have made.

In addition, he held a meeting with a number of Shia and Sunni clerics and scholars late on Wednesday, in which he called for increased vigilance in the face of the enemies’ plots.
