Portuguese president calls for enhanced ties with Iran

TEHRAN, Oct.15 (MNA) – Portugal’s President Anibal Cavaco Silva called for expansion of relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Cavaco Silva made the remarks on Thursday during a meeting with the newly appointed Iranian ambassador to Portugal, Hossein Gharibi.

He also underlined the need for further talks between the two countries’ officials to pave the way for increased bilateral cooperation.

The Iranian ambassador said that Portugal is an important member of the United Nations Security Council, adding Iran is hopeful that the European country would put forward proposals to help resolve issues facing the international community.

In addition, Gharibi said that the Islamic Republic, as an influential and powerful country, is able to help Portugal play a more effective role in the UN Security Council.
