Iranian, Filipino films share top award at Busan filmfest
TEHRAN,Oct.16(MNA) -- The Iranian film “Mourning” and the Filipino movie “Fino” won the award in the New Currents section of the 16th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) in the South Korean city on Friday.
The award is a purse of $30,000 for the best feature films by emerging Asian directors.
Directed by Morteza Farshbaf, “Mourning” tells the story of a deaf-mute couple who are left to care for a young boy after his parents are killed in a car accident.
“It took a lot of people a lot of time to make this film and I am just thankful to everyone who helped me along the way,” said Farshbaf during the closing ceremony.
The film is “a very confident attempt to create a new film language that is disturbing at times and heart-warming from moment to moment,” Hong Kong-based Chinese director Manshih Yonfan, head of the New Currents jury, said in a news conference.
“After all, the movie set a new standard of cinematic poetry,” he added.
“Nino” by director Loy Arcenas is about a family entangled by greed, set within the world of opera.
The award in the Flash Forward section, which is dedicated to non-Asian filmmakers, went to Italian director Guido Lombardi for “La-Bas - A Criminal Education”, on the contemporary issue of migration.
