Champassak accelerates improvement of irrigation
for dry season

(KPL) Champassak province is accelerating the improvement of irrigation system, and repair of degraded and broken water pumps to prepare for the coming dry season crop production.
The provincial responsible committee for irrigation sector attaches to the Champassak Agriculture and Forestry Service disclosed that the province has spent 1.6 billion kip on improvement and repair 11 irrigation projects, and other facility including water pumps and canal systems and built a number of catchment areas.
This factor is to ensure sufficiently water supply to the upcoming dry season production in the province. In addition, six irrigation systems with worth 4.3 billion kip are being built and expect to be completed on schedule.
Local farmers have also been urged to contribute workforce in clean canals and repair campaigns.
The province has 236 irrigation of which 142 irrigation system have been transferred to local people use and maintain, 94 irrigation systems, 56 gravity-fed water sites, 10 reservoirs and 170 water pumps is under the management of irrigation sector.
The farmers living near potential irrigation system across the province have had preparedness for dry season cash crops and rice seeds. Current provincial irrigation systems are able to feed water on 8,600 ha of dry season rice production and 12,200 ha of cash crops.
As more than 1,200 ha of agriculture area is identified accessible to the irrigation and 11,000 ha along Mekong and rivers will be able to attain affectively in the dry season.
