MALAYSIA ARTICULATES STAND ON SOCIAL MEDIA AT BROADBAND SUMMIT
From Normalazwa Jamaludin
GENEVA, Oct 28 (Bernama) -- Social media issues took the centre stage at the just-concluded Broadband Leadership Summit here in conjunction with the 2011 Telecom World conference organised by the United Nations' agency, International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
Information, Communications and Culture Minister Dr Rais Yatim, Malaysia's representative to the summit voiced the country's stand on the matter at the four-day event aimed at providing a platform to discuss issues facing today's global broadband industry, which ended on Thursday.
During a plenary session debate on social media on Monday, Rais put forth the importance and need to balance social media engagement with positive human values.
He emphasised that social media should not just revolve around distinctive ideologies and to create waves of change but must benefit mankind as well.
He said it must also be used in a socially responsible manner and adhere to laws and basic individual rights.
After launching the Malaysian Pavilion at Telecom World earlier in the week Rais had stated that "although other parties feel all is well with the world of social media, Malaysia has a few reservations on the matter."
He specifically mentioned three issues which needed to be addressed, related to law enforcement, cooperation with ITU, and the involvement of the younger generation in a socially acceptable manner without compromising a nation's values and culture.
