Huge Flood In Jakarta Expected In 200 Years

From Ahmad Fuad Yahya JAKARTA, Nov 3 (Bernama) -- The Jakarta Public Works Department has ruled out the possibility of a massive flood in the Indonesian capital next year. The department's head of water management, Tarjuki said if the great flood in 2007 were to recur it would only happen in about 200 years from now. He said the 2007 flooding was caused by the high intensity rainfall in Jakarta, Depok and Bogor, as well as the high tides on the coastal area of northern Jakarta. "What happened in 2007 was continuous rainfall of between 200 and 300 millimeters a hour for three days and night, making a total of 76 non-stop hours," he told the local media here on Thursday. Tarjuki said the department would install early flood warning systems at more rivers in Jakarta, including at Sungai Krukut, to monitor the flood situation. -- BERNAMA
