Noor Dubai presented as UAE Philanthropic Commitment during Clinton Global Initiative

Dubai, Sept. 28, 2008 (WAM) - In outlining the UAE's ongoing commitment to solving global challenges, Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State, introduced Noor Dubai, the latest initiative launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, at the 2008 Annual Clinton Global Initiative held in New York from 23-26 September 2008.

Noor Dubai was highlighted during a speech by Her Excellency Al Hashimy during the Education Working Group Luncheon on the second day of the event. The annual event brought together more than 130 leading CEOs and over 50 current and former heads of state to examine urgent global challenges in an endeavour to transform the awareness into tangible action.

"Noor Dubai is the latest example of Dubai's continued commitment to finding comprehensive, pragmatic and effective solutions to the many challenges we face in the world today. Just as these challenges know no borders, we have committed to finding solutions both at home and abroad," said Al Hashimy.

She added: "As part of its ambitious objective of delivering preventive eye care to over one million people worldwide, Noor Dubai features therapeutic, preventive, and education programmes. The three components will jointly seek to treat and prevent blindness and visual impairment in the UAE and developing countries on a regional and international scale." The Clinton Global Initiative brings together world leaders in business, government, science and religion to develop a framework to address contemporary issues of concern. Every participant contributes either his expertise or through donations to achieve the initiative's goals.

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Noor Dubai was launched on 3 September with a vision of a world free from preventable forms of blindness.

Dubai Health Authority is mandated with the responsibility of implementing the Noor Dubai agenda in collaboration with ORBIS International as well as Lions Clubs International. To date, Noor Dubai has reached out to people in a number of countries including Iraq, Afghanistan, Mali, Sri Lanka, Syria, Lebanon, Sudan, Somalia, Djibouti, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Egypt, Jordan and Palestine as well as the UAE.
