UAE imports from EU nations show double-digit decline

Imports to the UAE from major European Union markets witnessed a double-digit decline for the past two years, according to statistics by Dubai World.

The 2007 external trade statistics for Dubai shows that imports from the UK to the UAE declined from more than 8.1 billion Euros in 2005 to 5.3 billion Euros the following year, a decline of 35 per cent. A further decline of 25 per cent was posted in 2007, an import value of 3.9 billion Euros.

Imports from Finland to the UAE likewise declined at an average annual rate of 13 per cent, from 1.1 billion Euros in 2005 to 826 million Euros in 2007.

Imports from France were relatively stable during the period, posting a slight decrease in 2006, which was reversed the following year by a 7 per cent increase, for an average growth of 3 per cent. Similarly, imports from Hungary declined by 18 per cent in 2006, so that despite the 7 per cent growth in 2007, the average growth remained negative.

Despite reported increases in exports from Germany, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands to the UEA, overall imports from Europe were in the negative territory in 2006. The 6 per cent increase in 2007 lead to a very slight annual growth of 0.5 per cent.

Electrical and electronic equipment made up the majority of imports from the selected EU countries to the UAE. The value of imports for the three-year period amounted to 17.9 billion euro, or more than a quarter of the total value of imports to the UAE.

However, double-digit rates of annual declines were noted in the sector at 39 per cent in 2006 and 23 per cent in 2007. The average decline for the period is set at 31 per cent. This sector was largely responsible for the overall decline.

Although imports of pearls and precious/semi-precious stones and metals and jewellery also slowed down in 2006, the decline was very slight and was reversed the following year, for a positive growth of 27 per cent.

The second largest import from the selected EU countries to the UAE were machinery and mechanical appliances, reaching a two-year total of 14.7 billion Euros and accounting for a share of 22 per cent. Growth rates, though significantly lower in 2007, were double-digit, for an annual average growth of 21 per cent. Together, exports of these product groups accounted for almost half (48 per cent) of the countries' total exports to UAE.
