POLICE RESCUE TWO HOSTAGES, SHOOT DEAD ONE CAPTOR

Banda Aceh, Sept 29 (ANTARA) - Police have rescued two sailors who were taken hostage by a band of pirates at Seunebok Tengah cillage in East Aceh district Friday and shot dead one of the kindappers in the process, a spokesman said.

"We shot dead a member of the 3-man pirate gang that had kidnapped the two sailors. The pirates had guns and there was an exchange of fire," East Aceh Police Chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Ridwan Usman said here Monday.

The killed gang member was identified as M Nasir while the two other pirates escaped.

Usman said the security situation in the eastern part of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam province was still under control, and public activities were running normally.

The two rescued hostages, identified as Nizar and Yan, were members of a tugboat crew. After they were taken hostage on Friday (Sept 29), the pirates contacted their families and demanded a ransom of Rp500 million.
