Cadbury recalls 11 Chinese-made chocolate products in H.K.

HONG KONG, Sept. 29 Kyodo - British chocolate maker Cadbury ordered Monday a precautionary recall of 11
chocolate products made in China and sold in Hong Kong, as the tainted milk
scandal spreads worldwide.

Cadbury Asia Pacific Region Corporate Affairs director Trish Fields told Kyodo
News ''various traces of melamine'' were found in some of the 11 products
manufactured in Beijing.
''As a precautionary measure, we are pulling back the products as much and as
far out as possible,'' Fields said by telephone. ''We are testing products as
far as 18 months back.''
Fields said the amount of melamine tested in the products varies and further
test results will be available within days, but she reiterated that a person
has to consume an ''exceptionally large quantity of the products for a long
time'' to fall ill.
A company statement said their mainland dairy product suppliers had passed
government milk testing, but the results of the company's own testing on the
products were unsatisfactory.
''As a result of these tests, undertaken by our company, we have received
results that have cast doubt on the integrity of a range of our products
manufactured in China,'' the statement said.
The Beijing factory only makes 11 products, which were sold in the mainland or
exported to Taiwan, Hong Kong and Australia, Fields said, and the company
insisted no other products are affected.
She said the Beijing factory has stopped production and when all things are
settled, a new product testing procedure will be put in place before the
products again go to market.
Hong Kong's Center for Food Safety was informed of the recall.
''We appeal to the public to stop consuming the chocolate products concerned.
We would alert the trade to stop selling the affected products,'' the center
said in a statement, adding the products would be tested for the toxic agent
melamine, which is at the heart of the Chinese tainted milk scandal.
The recalled products included smaller and bulk packs of dark chocolate, milk
chocolate and cookies chocolate.
Local supermarket chains have also voluntarily taken off shelves Oreo wafers,
M&Ms and Snickers after the Indonesian government announced that high traces of
melamine were found in those popular products imported from China.
Melamine found in milk powder and milk products is blamed for the death of four
infants in China and thousands of children being hospitalized.
So far, Hong Kong has found 19 tainted products in the market, including milk,
ice-cream bars, biscuits, cakes, crackers, milk candies and most recently baby
cereal made by U.S. food maker Heinz.
Health authorities in Hong Kong have said five children aged between 2 and 10
years developed kidney stones after drinking mainland milk products for months.
A 4-month-old baby in nearby Macao was also diagnosed with kidney stones after
consuming a Nestle baby formula that was made in China. It tested positive for
melamine.
