146 families to remove for an embankment project

(KPL) Vientiane administration will remove 146 families and 50 shops along the Mekong Riverside between Pakpasak and Done Chan Palace.
The administration has prepare eight hectares of land in Nong Nieow village, Sikhottabong district, for resettling these families.
Vice Mayor of Vientiane Mr. Somvandy Nathavong, last Friday said that the removal was to facilitate the implementation of an embankment project to prevent flood and bank erosion and the construction of a public park. The development is estimated at US$ 40 million, while the government of the Republic of Korea has provided around US$ 30 million as a low-interest roan to the Lao government for implementing the development.
Mr. Somvandy said that the families had recognised the importance of the development and would begin moving from the area in November.Flood in August caused by rapid increasing water level in the Mekong damaged the property and farming areas of people living along the Mekong and prompted Vientiane residents to make a dike with 400,000 sandbags.
