Luang Prabang strives to expand crop plantation to 30,000
ha by 2009

(KPL) By the year 2009, Luang Prabang province will strive to expand land for the plantation of subsidiary crops to 30,000 ha with a focus on cash crops. These crops included maize to be grown on 14,600 ha, groundnuts on 2,500 ha, mung beans on 500 ha, soybean on 100 ha, sesame on 2,500 ha, cotton on 1,500 ha, and tobaccon on 100 ha.
The allocation of plantations in determined by the conditions and climate of each locality. The prime areas for the plantations are the rotary upland farm land allocated to each family.
Specially, areas in Kiou Kacham under the districts of Xieng Ngeun and Phou Khoune are selected for the experimental plantation of pears, peaches, grapes, and apples. In order to achieve this objective, an experimental station for the plantation and propagation of cold weather fruit trees will be set up in Phou Khoune district.
Last year, Luang Prabang reaped 877 tons of sesame, and 1,157 tons of legumes.
