Turkey welcomes adoption of October 11 as international day of girl child

ANKARA (A.A) - December 27, 2011 - Turkey welcomed on Monday adoption of October 11 as the International Day of Girl Child. A Foreign Ministry statement said Turkey, Canada and Peru prepared a resolution on declaration of October 11 as the International Day of Girl Child and presented it to the 66th Session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly. The resolution was adopted on December 19, 2011, the statement said. "We welcome adoption of the resolution unanimously," the ministry statement said. The statement said Turkey believed that declaration of October 11 as the International Day of Girl Child would help girls beware of their rights, realize and activate their potential. On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to declare October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child, establishing a day to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world. In reserving a day for advocacy and action by and for girls, the UN has signaled its commitment to end gender stereotypes, discrimination, violence, and economic disparities that disproportionately affect girls. As of 2012, October 11 will be celebrated as the International Day of Girl Child.
