Duchess of York launches new charity in Dubai, raising Dh3.5 million in auction
Dubai, Oct 8, 2008 (WAM) - Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, launched on Monday her new charity, Sarah Selects, in conjunction with realty majors, Select Property of the UK and Dubai-based Select Group, to support disadvantaged children in the UAE.
The new charity, Sarah Selects, unveiled at the launch ceremony of Aquitainia, evoked widespread appeal at a unique auction, fetching Dh 3.5 million for a one-bed room suite on the exclusive Aquitainia development.
The Duchess of York will be allocating all proceeds from the evening's auction to charitable causes for children within the UAE. Initial projects being looked at include Make a Wish Foundation in the UAE, support to children with diabetes and perhaps a school and village charity in Northern Iraq. The money raised by the charity will be held in Escrow.
The auction took place at Buddha Bar, Grosvenor House. In addition to the Duchess of York the event was attended by double Grammy award winner Kelly Rowland, Hamza Mustafa - Managing Director The World and other high profile Dubai personalities.
The Duchess of York commented: "The plight of children is an issue close to my heart, and I intend to devote time to choosing the right causes within the UAE in which to donate the money. The Aquitainia launch party was the perfect opportunity to coincide the launch of Sarah Selects as the event was attended by some of the most influential people in the UAE.
"The UAE is the springboard for launching Sarah Selects globally, helping children's causes all over the World by using Select Property and Select Group's development locations as the foundations for growing the charity." Commenting on the launch of the charity Rahail Aslam CEO Select Group said; "Select Group and Select Property are incredibly pleased to launch Sarah Selects with the Duchess of York. The Duchess is extremely committed to helping children all over the World, which is cause close to both mine and Mark's heart."
