UAERCA takes relief to quake victims in Kyrgyzstan
Abu Dhabi, Oct 8, 2008 (WAM) - The Red Crescent Authority of UAE (UAERCA) has started relief operations in Kyrgyzstan, after a massive earthquake hit the central Asian country's southern provinces.
RCA volunteers on ground are supplying the quake victims with food, cloth, blankets and other essential relief goods.
The earthquake, which measured 6.6, took the lives of 70 people and levelled a remote mountain village, compelling hundreds of families to flee the region. The quake was centered about 50 miles west of the regional capital, Lhasa, according to the official Xinhua News Agency.
Secretary General of the RCA Dr. Saleh Al Thae said that UAERCA moved swiftly to begin the relief operations in the worst hit areas in association with its counterpart in the central Asian Republic. Several essential relief supplies were purchased from the local markets to save time of shipping them from UAE, Al Thae explained.
