Standing Vice-Premier urges Phongsaly to promote natural tourism

(KPL) The Standing Deputy Prime Minister Somsavat Lengsavad has asked the authorities of the northernmost Phongsaly province to pay more attention to developing their natural tourism to attract more domestic and foreign visitors.
During his visit to the province last week Mr. Somsavat said that the mountainous province had unspoiled nature and was abundant of flora, which was suitable for the development of natural tourism such as trekking.
He urged the authorities to protect the natural resources in the province including the Phou Fa Mountain, which is the habitats of various animals and water sources, and prevent illegal logging.
Mr. Somsavat also asked the authorities to consider the resettlement of the locals who settle at flood-prone areas in order to protect them from flood in the future. He told the authorities to speed up restoring the basic infrastructure, which have been damaged by flood such as roads, bridges and irrigation systems.
Phongsaly Governor Mr. Khamsane Souvong said the province had an annual growth of gross domestic product (GDP) at 6.6% and its per capita income of 357 US dollars.
The province plans to increase its per capita income to 360 to 400 US dollars in 2010.
