S. Koreans` cancer survival rate improves

SEOUL, Oct. 15 (Yonhap) -- The survival rate of South Korean cancer patients has improved over the past several years thanks to improved treatment and early detection of the potentially fatal disease, health officials said Wednesday.

The country's average survival rate of five-years for cancer patients, or the
percentage of patients remaining alive for at least five years after being
diagnosed, stood at 52.2 percent between 2001 and 2005, the Health Ministry said.
The rate between 1993 and 1995 was 42.1 percent.
The reported number of cancer patients totaled 398,824 between 2003 and 2005,
according to the report. Approximately 132,941 patients were diagnosed with the
disease every year during the cited period.
