Japanese firms in Dubai to set up chamber of commerce

CAIRO, Oct. 15 Kyodo - Japanese companies operating in Dubai are preparing to set up a chamber of commerce and industry to promote the exchange of information, officials of the Japan External Trade Organization said Wednesday.

The first Japanese chamber in the Middle East will begin operating after
winning approval from the local authority possibly at the end of October, they
said.
A group of 30 companies established an organizing committee at the end of
August and applied to the authority for approval in September.
The chamber, which will have its office in JETRO's office in Dubai, is expected
to have 100 member companies in the first year.
Dubai, one of the seven emirates and most populous city of the United Arab
Emirates, is attracting Japanese companies because of its rapid economic
growth.
According to JETRO, 275 Japanese companies are currently operating in Dubai,
with the Japanese population coming close to 3,000.
