M'SIA'S HEART TRANSPLANT GIRL LIVING LIFE TO THE FULLEST

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 (Bernama) -- Jaws dropped as double heart transplant patient Tee Hui Yi, dubbed the 'miracle girl', turned up at the National Heart Institute (IJN) to attend a Hari Raya gathering for 11 heart transplant patients Wednesday.

That's because doctors were stunned to see the 16-year-old confidently
waltzing into the IJN like any normal teenager, glowing in good health and
radiating in confidence.

Dressed in a pair of blue shorts and pink top, Hui Yi had even put on
weight -- a living example of the wonders of modern medical marvels.

The doctors were initially shocked that this was the same girl who was
fighting for her life before undergoing a heart transplant at the IJN in October
last year.

When her body rejected the heart, she underwent a second transplant
within 24 hours before she was discharged in January this year.

At the Hari Raya gathering Wednesday, the new Hui Yi was sufficient reason
for the doctors, together with the others present, to give her a standing
ovation.

They must have recalled the time last year when the teenager was a picture
of emaciation, having anxiously waited for three years for donors to undergo a
heart transplant.

Speaking to reporters later, Hui Yi said she felt normal and was having
loads of fun with friends and teachers in school as she takes a "slow and steady
approach" in catching up with her studies.

The Form Four student of Convent Batu Pahat Johore said: "I am aware my
SPM
(Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) is next year and I need to catch up."

The petite girl said she now realised the true meaning of life after having
had to wait for three years for a heart donor.

"I am grateful for a second chance in life. I cherish my parents and I am
also thankful to all IJN staff," she added.

Meanwhile, consultant cardiothoracic and heart/lung transplant surgeon Dr
Mohamed Ezani Mohammad Taib said: "Today marks her first year (successful
transplant) anniversary.

"She is an inspiration to other people who are suffering and waiting for
the transplant and this is also a method of curing herself."

Meanwhile, Hui Yee said she was willing to give moral support to other
patients in similar predicament as she was before.

She said that one of the main reasons she turned up at IJN Wednesday was to
give strength and support to Winnie Chen, 23, a former clerk at a private firm
in Ipoh, who was implanted with a Paracorporeal Ventricular Assist Device
(PVAD) last August.

In a related matter, Muhammad Fikri Nor Azmi, Malaysia's first recipient of
a mechanical heart, was unable to attend Wednesday's event as he got 'cold
feet', said an IJN offical.
