UNRWA and Sharjah's Children Welfare Initiative join hands to protect Palestinian Children

Sharjah, Oct 16, 2008 (WAM) - United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and Sharjah's 'Peace on you Little Ones' (Salam Ya Sighar) - a Humanitarian initiative aimed at protecting uprooted Palestinian children- signed an agreement for providing food for 110,000 students in Gaza for the next five months.

The Sharjah initiative was launched by Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of HH Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, UAE Supreme Council member and ruler of Sharjah in an effort to alleviate sufferings of Palestinian children.

Peter Ford, the Representative of UNRWA's Commissioner-General and Tareq Zaghlool, representative of 'Salam Ya Sighar' initiative in Gaza signed the agreement, according to a statement.

The humanitarian initiative has collected over USD 22mn from individuals and institutions in Sharjah to help implement various projects aimed at improving the living conditions of Palestinian children.

Earlier yesterday, the Sharjah initiative announced its plans to open an office in Palestine to oversee the implementation of its forthcoming humanitarian projects for children.

Meanwhile, UNRWA's Commissioner-General, Karen Abu Zayd hailed the new Arab initiative aimed at helping Palestinians, and said that the provision of food at schools 'will help support the studies of children' who walk to schools with empty stomachs.
