UAE emphasises need for regional cooperation to curb Human Trafficking at Kabul conference

Abu Dhabi, Oct 16, 2008 (WAM) - The UAE took part in a regional conference held in Kabul, Afghanistan on October 12 and 13, on Combating Human Trafficking.

The participation of the UAE delegation, headed by Dr Saeed Al Ghufli, Executive Director at the Ministry of State for the FNC affairs, comes in line with the efforts of the UAE to partner in regional and international efforts to curb the practice of human trafficking.

H.E. Dr. Anwar Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Chair of the UAE National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking, said: "The UAE's participation in this strategic event reflects our commitment to fight trans-national human trafficking by linking it with international initiatives. The UAE is committed to enhance its participation in such regional and international events to further activate the international efforts aimed at combating this criminal activity that has affected many societies in the world".

Dr Al Ghufli said the topics discussed during the event will further strengthen the next stage in the UAE's efforts. He praised the efforts of delegates from participating countries, which highlighted their commitment to combat this crime. "Periodical follow-up on the recommendations that were raised by the participants will be made to enhance international efforts," he explained.

The UAE delegation presented a paper that included the efforts and initiatives launched by the UAE in combating human trafficking. It highlighted the achievements of the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking and the steps taken to minimize the negative impact of this crime on UAE society.

Delegates at the conference commended the determination of the UAE to fight this crime through the National Committee, which has unveiled an integrated plan to strengthen awareness and build ties with international organizations and other countries to curb this threat.

The Chief of the Regional Office of the International Organization of Migration (IOM) as well as the head of Afghanistan's delegation thanked the UAE for the country's participation and their support for the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
