UAE's Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak honoured for charity and humanitarian work

Abu Dhabi, Oct 17, 2008 (WAM) - "Cinema Verite" and the Middle East International Film Festival (MEIFF) have honoured Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, for her overall charity, humanitarian, and social work worldwide.

The award was received on her behalf by Mohamed Khalaf Al Mazrouei, Vice President of MEIFF and Director General of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH). The award was presented by Yamina Benguigui, Deputy Mayor of Paris, on Wednesday at the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi during the events of MEIFF.

MEIFF is organised by ADACH and will continue until the 19th of October, 2008.

Mazrouei stressed that MEIFF appreciates the continuous dedicated support by Sheikha Fatima for all the various cultural and humanitarian activities, both inside the UAE and abroad, especially with regard to women's activities worldwide.

He commended the unique humanitarian role of Sheikha Fatima regionally and globally, adding that that this award comes in recognition of her known achievements in all areas, and for her huge efforts to strengthen the role of UAE women, to whom she is an ideal model.

Cinema Verite prizes are awarded annually to leading international figures who engage in prominent humanitarian and social work. Its management includes some of the most important influential figures in the world socially.

Benguigui said that management of Cinema Verite is proud to award Sheikha Fatima as she is a fine example and a model for Arab women, adding that her charity and humanitarian mark is clear and present in all parts of the world, and that she is today one of the most prominent figures who enjoy universal respect in all international forums.

The Deputy Mayor of Paris said that Sheikha Fatima had stood by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in various stages of the founding of the United Arab Emirates, and supported his tireless efforts to build the state and turn it into a wonderful hospitable country, adding that she sought to give women their rightful place in the process of building and developing the county.

Cinema Verite is a Paris-based film festival and exhibition that aims to advance social and humanitarian issues through the medium of films.

It is an annual public platform whose aim is bring together prominent film directors, actors, politicians, and opinion leaders to address social issues.

It provides screening of socially conscious films in order to provide discussion and stimulate debates on relevant issues, such as women and the environment.

MEIFF, which was launched in October 2007, is an annual cultural event organised by ADACH to bring a diverse slate of international films to the Abu Dhabi and to introduce filmmakers from around the world to the region.

MEIFF will showcase more distinct films this year, in addition to its cooperation with Cinema Verite. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
