Eco-farming project expects to improve people's life
Hanoi (VNA) - A French-financed project aiming to encourage eco-farming in Vietnam 's northern mountainous and midland region was launched in Hanoi on Oct. 17.
The project has a total sum of over 1.3 million euros, including 1 million
euros in grant from the French Development Agency, 217,000 euros from the
French centre for international cooperation in agriculture for development,
and the remainder contributed by the Northern Mountainous Institute for
Agriculture-Forestry Technology and Science.
To better the life of farmers in three benefiting provinces of Phu Tho, Yen
Bai and Son La, the project will help farmers develop farming techniques
with vegetation cover, combine husbandry with cultivation, and establish a
system of plants suitable to the ecological environment.
It also aims to support the development of environmentally-friendly
agricultural production systems based on the effective exploitation of
natural resources and popularize these systems nationwide via the national
agricultural promotion network.
Project developers also expect to enhance capacity of agriculturists and
farmers in managing and promoting eco-farming.
Speaking at a press briefing in Hanoi the same day, French Ambassador to
Vietnam Herve Bolot highlighted the project as a typical example of
cooperation between Vietnamese and French relevant agencies.
He expected that the project, once completed by the end of 2012, would pave
the way for the implementation of other French-funded projects in Vietnam
.
To Ngoc Chau, deputy director of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural
Development's Department for External Relations, said the implementation of
this project would contribute to spurring the development of the Vietnamese
agricultural sector in general and raise the living standards of people in
benefited localities.
During 199-2005, a similar project in the northern mountainous region was
jointly carried out by the French centre for international cooperation in
agriculture for development, the Vietnam Technology and Science Institute
and the Northern Mountainous Institute for Agriculture and Forestry
Technology and Science.
With 15 provinces, mainly inhabited by ethnic minority people, the northern
mountainous and midland region sees numerous farming difficulties due to
unfavourable geographical conditions, including sloppy hills and
mountains.-Enditem
