EU`s Solana hails GCC progress

Brussels, October 19, SPA -- High Representative for the Common
Foreign and Security Policy, Secretary-General of the Council of the
European Union Javier Solana has expressed pride over the growth and
progress of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

In a press statement carried by Kuwaiti News Agency (KUNA), Solana
said the GCC has become an influential organization.

On GCC's relations with the EU, Solana said it would be possible to
further develop the existing relations between the two sides.

He hoped that the signing of the free trade agreement between the EU
and the GCC would take place soon, describing this development as an
important one.

Solana said he is eager to listen to the gulf leaders on issues that
concern the region.

"The GCC member states have effectively participated in encouraging
peace and cooperation in the region, " he said, adding that he will
discuss during his tour the relations of the GCC with the EU and the
latest developments in the region.

In addition to the United Arab Emirates, Solana will also visit
Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Syria.
