PRESIDENT, DEMOCRAT PARTY CADRES DONATE BLOOD
Jakarta, Oct 19 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Democrat Party cadres donated blood here Sunday afternoon on the occasion of celebrating the party's 7th anniversary.
The president and First Lady Ani Yudhoyono who just arrived here from Bali on Sunday afternoon for a two-day working visit directly joined Democrat Party's cadres at the Jakarta Fair grounds.
The head of state called on the people to voluntarily donate blood for those who need it. "It is important to become blood donors and I call on all parties to voluntarily donate blood for our brothers and sisters who need it," the president said while expressing hope that blood donation would be a tradition to help others.
On the occasion, the president donated 250 cc of his type A blood.
According to dr Udjo Sani of the Blood Procurement Section at the Blood Transfusion Unit of the Indonesian Red Cross' Jakarta Chapter, till 11 am or minutes before the head of state arrived, the number of blood donors reached 60 people.
"The number was expected to reach between 300 and 400 donors till 1 pm but as the number of people wanting to donate blood was big, the number of donors was increased to 500," he said.
At the celebration of Democrat Party's anniversary, the president and First Lady Ani Yudhoyono were accompanied by Health Minister Siti Fadillah Supari, State Minister for Administrative Reforms Taufik Effendy, General Chairman of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) Marie Muhammad and the president's youngest son Edhie Baskoro.
