Lao workers to attend 7th ASEAN Skills Competition in Malaysia

(KPL) The Lao PDR will send seven representatives to the 7th ASEAN Skills Competition (ASC) to be held in Malaysia in November this year, a biannual event aimed to boost vocational and technical skills in the region. Mr. Phouvanh Chanthavong, Director General of the Skills Development and Employment Department, Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, said that the competition, which is being organised by Malaysia’s Works Ministry, will see 19 competition categories, ranging from brick-laying, cooking, cabinet making, dressmaking, restaurant services to electrical installation, graphic design, and welding.
The Lao PDR will send its representatives to compete in brick-laying, welding, cooking, cabinet making, dressmaking, electrical installation, and graphic design, said Mr. Phouvanh.
During the competition held on Nov. 14-16, participants from the ten member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will vie for gold, silver and bronze medals as well as other honours, according to the organiser.
The ASC started in 1995 when its first competition was held in Kuala Lumpur to provide an opportunity for the exchange of knowledge, expertise and experience among delegates from member countries.
The objective of the contest is to promote the development of quality vocational and technical skills as well as to foster and encourage technical cooperation in vocational and technical education and training among members countries.
