640,000 packs of non-own brand products made by Itoham to be recalled

TOKYO, Oct. 26 Kyodo - Itoham Foods Inc. said Sunday that 13 products made for other brands at its factory in Chiba Prefecture totaling 640,000 packs will be recalled in addition to its own brand products as toxic substances exceeding the government safety
standard have been detected in the underground water sources used in food production.

Including its own brand products, for which the company issued an earlier
recall announcement, a total of around 3.31 million packs of 26 products are
subject to the voluntary recall.
The food manufacturer based in Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture, said Saturday it
had detected cyanogen compounds exceeding the government's residue standard in
wells located at its factory in Kashiwa, Chiba Prefecture.
Itoham said it provided the 13 items of non-own brand sausages to 10 concerns,
including the Japanese Consumers' Co-Operative Union and its affiliate. The 10
concerns will be in charge of the voluntary recall.
The remaining eight entities are supermarket chain operators in the Kanto
region -- Tokyo Store Corp., Value Lawson Inc., Summit Inc., OK Corp., CGC
Japan Co., Costco Wholesale Japan Inc., Torisen Co. and Beisia.
The sausage products were produced between Sept. 18 and Oct. 15.
The product supplied to the co-operative union has already hit the market in
Tokyo and eight prefectures including Miyagi, Saitama and Nagano. The co-op
said separately Sunday that it will voluntarily collect the item.
The co-op said, however, the sausage product would not cause health problems if
eaten as the level of toxic substances detected was very low.
On Saturday, Itoham said it will voluntarily collect 2.67 million packs of its
own products made during the period at the Kashiwa factory, including those
which have passed their expiration dates. The number of packs with use-by dates
that have not expired totals 1.94 million.
Itoham has been under fire since the revelation of the problem, with its
toll-free phone lines for advice flooded Sunday with calls from complaining
consumers.
Company staff, who scrambled to respond to the phone calls, have continued to
apologize to consumers, according to Itoham.
A number of consumers are worried about the possible impact on the health of
their children who have eaten the products, while many consumers have
criticized the company over its delay in revealing the problem, company
officials said.
After the announcement, retailers rushed to remove Itoham products from store
shelves.
