IFC to increase investment in Laos

(KPL) International Finance Cooperation (IFC) has committed to increasing investment and advisory programmes to support enterprises in Laos.
In these challenging time, IFC has positioned to help the local companies and try to limit the impact of the global economic crisis on the landlocked country, said Mr Lars Thunell, IFC Executive Vice President and CEO.
The IFC also focuses on private investment, financial institutes, exchange market investment and the provision of technical assistance, said Lars Thunell.
In the coming years IFC will increase its investment in areas that leverage the country’s comparative advantage in natural resources, including agribusiness and mining.
In addition Laos has a great potential to develop renewable energy through hydropower, which is in line with the World Bank Group’s strategy to help mitigate climate change by accelerating investment in renewable energy globally by 20 per cent each year.
Lars Thunell emphasised the importance of continuing to work with donors and partners in providing high-level advisory service to attract investors, as well as with the government in improving business environment in Laos.
So far IFC has invested in tourism, general manufacturing, telecommunication and banking sector in the total of US$ 14.5 million.
