UPC to address Plan Abu Dhabi 2030 at London Investment Forum
Abu Dhabi, Oct 28, 2008 (WAM) - The Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (UPC) will highlight its innovative Plan 2030 vision and Estidama tailored framework at the Abu Dhabi Investment Forum in London on the 28th of October.
The UPC's participation at the highly anticipated event will underline its role in paving the way to create a leading, modern, authentic and sustainable Arabic city that responds to the evolving needs of its people and attracts investors.
The UPC will reveal its plans on delivering economic sustainability to increase prosperity for Abu Dhabi residents and businesses without compromising sensitive eco systems at the London forum held under the patronage of HH General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council.
"While the protection of our environmental and cultural heritage is a cornerstone of the Abu Dhabi Plan 2030, the UPC is also committed to fostering long-term economic development," said HE Falah Al Ahbabi, General Manager of the UPC.
Chaired by Sheikh Mohammed, the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council defines the shape of the Emirate, ensuring factors such as sustainability, infrastructure capacity, community planning and quality of life, by overseeing development across the city and the Emirate as a whole.
Focused on creating an attractive, liveable place, Abu Dhabi's Plan 2030 key strategic development themes provide a blueprint for the capital's long-term success, centering on fostering diversified economy potential; enhancing connectivity and transport options; opening up public spaces; ensuring environmental sustainability; and preserving the Emirate's unique culture and environment.
UPC is breaking the mould of traditional model of "city planning" by presenting a multidimensional view of urbanization and putting forth its role as an agent of social and economical development.
Its framework has been born out of major analysis of social, cultural and economic life in the UAE and workshops involving leading planners and community development experts. Its unique ‘Next Generation Planning' approach works on the principle that urban planning is not just about functionality, but should enhance the quality of life for all citizens by establishing a cohesive and stable environment for the next generations.
Plan Abu Dhabi 2030 spotlights significant growth of the Capital City District, which, as the seat of power, will become an iconic centre for Government, education and knowledge-based institutions. A complete capital, it will also provide residential neighbourhoods and a network of transport and pedestrian options. A Capital that is functioning as an innovative ground out of which a new generation of urban planners are designing city environments with genuine values to enhance life of all of its communities.
One of the frameworks that the UPC has put in place to regulate sustainable development as Abu Dhabi moves towards 2030 is ‘Estidama', the first buildings and community program in the Middle East to create sustainability guidelines.
Estidama, meaning ‘sustainability' in Arabic, addresses sustainability concerns from environmental, economic, cultural and social angles. Its regulations include New Building Guidelines, Existing Building Guidelines and Community Design Guidelines that will be implemented by a specialized panel of Government bodies tasked with conducting market studies and technical research, training assessors and issuing formal certifications.
"With Estidama as a driving force, Plan Abu Dhabi 2030 will be the steering vision to create a capital city that meets the demands of a growing number of citizens whilst fulfilling the Governmental responsibilities," concluded Al Ahbabi.
Further information on policies from Abu Dhabi's world-leading urban evolution will be released by the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council in due course, throughout the rest of 2008 and into 2009.
