Sharjah Ruler to open World Book Fair 2008 today

Sharjah, Oct 29, 2008 (WAM) - Sharjah World Book Fair 2008 will be inaugurated today by H.H Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, the Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.
The 27th edition of the 10-day event is organized by Department of Culture '&' Information of Sharjah Government at the Sharjah Expo Centre will exhibit more than 100000 titles out of which 28698 are in Arabic. The number of new editions to be put on display amounts to 57927.
The opening ceremony will be attended by high profile audience including Sheikhs, ministers, senior officials, representatives of Arab and foreign diplomatic corps accredited in the UAE, senior officials and public benefit bodies.
Organizers said the winner of this year's Best Publisher Award, part of the fair's activities, is the UAE Federal Ministry of Culture, Youth and Community Development while the Best Arab Publisher went to Egypt's Maktabat Zahra' Al Sahrq and Syria's Dar Kan'an. The Cultural Personality Award went to Al Khaleej's weekly cultural supplement.
Chairman of the Department of Culture '&' Information of Sharjah Government Abdullah Mohammed Al Owais said the fair is just one of the many significant cultural events held in Sharjah and is yet another demonstration of the emirate's cultural movement which has been patronized and sponsored by Ruler of Sharjah ever since the first edition was held in early 1980's.
The prime aim of the annual event is to generate reading habit among the people, mainly the younger generation, and to make quality books accessible to them at affordable prices.
In recognition of its international standard and success, the Sharjah World Book Fair is given memberships of many international organizations such as (1) Afro-Asian Book Council (2) Arab Publishers' Association (3) GCC Book Committee and others.
