Mohammed bin Zayed awarded German Order of Merit

Abu Dhabi, Oct 30, 2008 (WAM) - General H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces has been awarded the Order of Merit of Federal Republic of Germany, in recognition of his efforts and support to the humanitarian works worldwide.

Sheikh Mohammed received the honour from German Minister of Foreign Affairs Frank-Walter Steinmeier when he met him and his accompanying delegation this evening. The German minister is visiting the UAE as part of a regional tour. The German minister is visiting the UAE as part of a regional tour.

Sheikh Mohammed welcomed Steinmeier and expressed his thanks to the German government for bestowing him with the honour. He said the UAE was committed to humanitarian works and to helping the needy people in different parts of the world.

He praised the progressive ties between the two friendly countries and commended the role played by Germany in the international efforts to resolve different issues, particularly the Palestinian issue.

Sheikh Mohammed reiterated UAE's stand in support of the international efforts aimed at regaining the Palestinian people's rights, including their right to establish their independent state.

Steinmeier expressed the German government's appreciation to the government of Abu Dhabi for granting a plot of land to build the German embassy on. The new embassy complex was opened today in presence of the German minister.

He also expressed his country's desire to strengthen cooperation with the UAE. He also lauded the balanced policies adopted by the UAE which earned it respect of the world.

Sheikh Mohammed and Steinmeier discussed efforts being made to create a tangible progress in the Middle East peace process in the light of the recent developments aimed at reviving the Arab peace initiative. They also exchanged views on the current global financial crisis and its impact on the Middle East and Europe.

Also discussed were the latest regional developments, as well as topics of mutual interest.

The meeting was attended by H.E. Dr Anwar Mohammed Gargash, minister of state for foreign affairs, H.E. Khaldoun Khalifa Al Mubarak, chairman of the Executive Affairs Authority, Mohammed Mubarak Al Mazrouei, undersecretary of the Abu Dhabi crown prince's court and Peter Brands, German ambassador.
