Japan eyeing Dec. 14 for trilateral summit with China, S. Korea

TOKYO, Oct. 31 Kyodo -
Japan is considering Dec. 14 as the date for a proposed trilateral summit with
China and South Korea in Fukuoka Prefecture, southwestern Japan, government
sources said Friday.
The date and exact venue are likely to be decided next week for the meeting to
exchange opinions on the global financial turmoil and to confirm cooperation on
the North Korean nuclear issue, they said.
Among the candidate venues is a hotel in the city of Fukuoka but the summit is
more likely to be held at Kyushu National Museum in Dazaifu, Fukuoka
Prefecture, according to the sources.
Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso has sounded out China and South Korea about a
trilateral summit with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and South Korean President Lee
Myung Bak.
Japan, China and South Korea have held trilateral meetings on the sidelines of
summits of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations but they agreed last
November to hold trilateral meetings in their countries in rotation.
The first such meeting was to be held in September in Japan but was postponed
due to the abrupt resignation of Aso's predecessor Yasuo Fukuda.
