FORMER NTB GOVERNOR`S PHYSICAL CONDITION GETTING WORSE-
Mataram, Indonesia, Oct 31 (ANTARA) - Physical condition of former West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Governor Lalu Serinata is getting worse after having gone on hunger strike for four days since his admittance into Mataram Correctional Institution (LP Mataram) last Monday on charges of having embezzled funds from NTB'S 2001-2003 regional budget.
LP Mataram's clinics spokesperson dr Ida Ayu Dharmaratih said here on Friday that Serinata's blood tension in the morning was recorded at 86/60 and his physical condition continued to weaken.
She said Serinata's blood pressure continued to drop since he was detained on Monday.
According to her, such a condition was dangerous enough for the the 67-year-old former governor and therefore LP Mataram doctors would continue to monitor his physical condition especially the function of his kidneys and blood sugar.
Since Serinata remained on hunger strike, it was feared to influence his kidneys and to lead to kidney failure.
Serinata, who was Provincial Legislative Assembly chairman in the 1999-2004 period, was detained by the NTB high prosecutor's office in the Kasturi Room Block III of LP Mataram with 17 other detainees in relation with alleged corruption and misuse of the Assembly's funds from the regional budget in 2001-2002 and unexpected funds of Rp9 billion in 2003.
The former NTB governor has been on hunger strike since he was detained on Monday evening after being grilled for about five hours.
Meanwhile, West Nusa Tenggara (MUI) chapter of Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI) chairman Syaiful Muslim has said hunger strike was prohibited by religion because it was part of a suicide act.
"Intention to go on hunger strike until death is strongly prohibited by religion," he said, adding that a person, who refused to eat or drink for a long period of time to protest about something, was not thankful for the mercy of God.
Syaiful Muslim said that all religious people, especially Muslims, should make every effort to keep their health condition because because it was the most expensive part in their lives.
"Therefore we don't have to support the act of hunger strike until death. We feel worry about what has happened to former West Nusa Tenggara Governor Lalu Serinata but we do not support his effort to go on hunger strike," Syaiful Muslim said.
