UMNO'S GENERAL ASSEMBLY WILL BE HELD FROM MARCH 24 TO 28 NEXT YEAR

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 1 (Bernama) -- United Malays National Organisation (Umno)'s general assembly will be held from March 24 to 28 next year, Umno president Abdullah Ahmad Badawi announced Friday.

"The decision has been made long ago. Once the Umno divisions finish
holding
their respective meetings, they will present their reports to Umno headqurters
which will prepare for the assembly based on these reports," he told reporters
after chairing a party supreme council (MT) meeting at Umno's headquarters
here. Umno is the political party leading the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition.

He also advised certain groups in the party to stop spreading lies and
defamatory messages using the short-messaging-service (SMS) against particular
candidates who will be contesting in Umno's elections.
"
Those receiving the messages are advised not to be influenced by them as it
could lead to the break up of Umno.

"The MT warns candidates and party members to observe the party's code of
ethics or be prepared to face the consequences.," he said.

Abdullah, who is the prime minister, also warned lobby agents and vote
canvassers for candidates who had come to the capital ahead of today's (MT)
meeting, to leave before disciplinary action was taken against them.

He said the MT meeting Friday agreed that they be warned as their
activities
might lead to money politics.

"Based on reports received, many of them are present at hotels here to
directly or indirectly campaign to influence voters on making choices as to who
they should or should not vote.

"In order to prevent the situation from getting out of hand, I wish to warn
them to leave and go back to their divisions before they are detected by Umno's
election monitors, who are already on the ground to carry out their duties," he
said.
Abdullah also said the MT decided that candidates in the election would be
allowed to meet party members to campaign but this would be arranged by the
respective state Umno headuarters.

"There will be no other opportunties for them to do so. This is to ensure
that they will not be involved in unethical campaigns," he said.

He also said Friday's meeting discussed various socio-economic issues,
which
would be addressed by Umno's management committee.

Calls for public debates by candidates offering themselves for key posts in
the party was not discussed at the meeting, he said.

Replying to a question, Abdullah said he would step down as prime minister
a few days after the assembly.
