HCT hosts education forum in New York

Abu Dhabi, Nov 3, 2008 (WAM) - The United Arab Emirates strongly believes in higher education as a key engine for progress and global tolerance, said H.E. Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education '&' Scientific Research.
Sheikh Nahyan, who is the Chancellor of the Higher Colleges of Technology, made the remarks while addressing via satellite the first North American Regional Forum of Education Without Borders, hosted by the HCT at the New York City headquarters of the Institute of International Education, in conjunction with the Institute of International Education (IIE).
"Through higher education, we can find the right approach for issues causing tension and leading to extremism. Through higher education, we can extend bridges of entente and peaceful co-existence," he added.
The daylong Forum brought together an impressive group of leaders from North American Colleges and Universities to discuss the issues and challenges of globalization that face educators today.
Sheikh Nahyan said though considered a young nation; the UAE saw rapid development in the field of higher education, compared with the United States and Canada. He revealed that the next forum will be held in the UAE to coincide with the Education Without Borders Conference in 2009.
With the theme Reframing Higher Education: North American Perspectives on Internationalization and Globalization, college and university presidents took part in high level panel discussions on such topics as: Branch Campuses in the Middle East; Preparing students for employment in the global marketplace; Trends in the recruitment of international students; and Accreditation processes and transfer ability across countries. The panels were moderated by journalists who specialize in international and education issues.
Dr. Tayeb Kamali, Vice Chancellor of Higher Colleges of Technology, says the Forum provided an opportunity to "reflect on ways to move ahead by sharing best practices, lessons learned and specific recommendations to further the development of our students, institutions and nations in reframing higher education." According to Allan Goodman, President and CEO of the Institute of International Education, "IIE welcomes the opportunity that Education Without Borders provides to help North American higher education to achieve further excellence in an increasingly borderless world." The Forum is a regional follow-on to the prestigious biannual Education Without Borders World Forum established in 2007. The next World Forum will be held in 2009 in the UAE, in conjunction with the Education Without Borders International Student Conference
