Qatar shows interest in new Mitsubishi small jet

TOKYO, Nov. 4 Kyodo - The Qatari government on Tuesday expressed interest in Japan's first passenger jet to be produced by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., Japanese officials said.

A joint statement, released after the third meeting of the Japan-Qatar Joint Economic Committee, said the Japanese government ''emphasized the significant
contribution that will be made by the wide use of environmentally friendly
regional passenger aircraft developed in Japan for solving the environmental
problems.''
''The Qatari side expressed its interest in this project,'' the statement said.
Japan has been promoting the global sale of the Mitsubishi Regional Jet,
scheduled to be launched in 2013.
A Japanese industry ministry official said the Qatari government has not yet
mentioned whether the oil-rich country is interested in ''purchasing'' the new
70-90 seat class regional jet.
During the economic meeting in Tokyo, Japan also asked Qatar to ensure that a
cut in oil production by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries amid
the financial turmoil will not lead to a further slowdown in the world economy,
the officials said.
The two countries agreed that well-balanced supply and demand is important in
stabilizing the global energy market and that they will organize a
ministerial-level meeting of oil-rich countries and oil consuming Asian
countries in Japan in 2009.
The meeting was attended by Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone,
Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Toshihiro Nikai, and Qatari
Energy and Industry Minister Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah.
Earlier in the day, Al-Attiyah, who is also deputy prime minister, pledged to
Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso that Qatar will continue to ensure stable
supplies of energy resources to Japan, according to the Foreign Ministry.
Aso and Al-Attiyah exchanged views on recent economic and financial
developments and agreed on the importance of enhancing the two countries'
bilateral exchanges, the ministry said.
Qatar is the fourth-largest supplier of oil and natural gas to Japan,
accounting for 10.4 percent of Japan's total crude oil imports of around 4.12
million barrels per day in 2007, and 12.3 percent of natural gas imports of
about 66.82 million tons that year, according to the Foreign Ministry.
