CHINA NOT OBJECTING TO DESTRUCTION OF ITS MELAMINE-CONTAMINATED MILK
Beijing, Nov 6 (ANTARA) - China does not object to the steps taken by the Indonesian government in destroying Chinese milk products which are contaminated by melamine, an Indonesian diplomat said.
"There is no reaction from the Chinese government to the Indonesian steps in destroying melamine-contaminated milk it has imported from China," Indonesian Trade Attache Imbang Listiyadi said here on Wednesday.
He said that China could understand the Indonesian government's steps as far as the Chinese products were destroyed proportionally and were proven to have been contaminated by melamine.
Listiyadi said he had received various reports saying that China so far had made various active efforts to improve the standardization and security of its milks and milk products so that they would be safe for consumption.
Late last month, the Indonesia government destroyed Chinese milk and milk products which were found to have melamine content.
The Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) destroyed about 478,265 packs of Chinese milk and milk products which contained melamine.
Last September, melamine-contaminated milk formula products were found in circulating in Chinese market. Thousands of infants were infected and some of them died.
The Indonesian government then withdrew all milk products from the market and banned the importation and circulation of Chinese milk products.
