MALAYSIA COMPETITIVE IN POULTRY INDUSTRY

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 6 (Bernama) -- Malaysia should promote its poultry industry in the export market as it is competitive compared to other regional players, said the deputy chairman of the World Halal Forum (WHF), Nordin Abdullah.

He said currently the industry had excess production which was 120
percent more than demand.

"We can leverage on the existing strength of the poultry industry. There is
also an excess of egg production now. We need to be doing something about this,"
Nordin told reporters after chairing the WHF CEO roundtable here.

Nordin added that there are several other areas that have been identified
as key sectors to attract investments, such as palm oil and beef.

"For beef, there is too much import and this has curtailed the growth of
local production.

"So, this is an area that the government needs to address because the
money being invested in the cattle industry is not being fully utilised to
attain optimum potential," he said.

He noted that Malaysia had the capacity to rear cattle at oil palm
estates.

"The amount of land planted with oil palm is what can be utilised to rear
cattle," he said.

Meanwhile, IHI Alliance chief executive officer Darhim Hashim said the
consumption of beef in the country is quite high and it is impossible to be 100
percent self sufficient.

"We consume something like 140,000 tonnes of beef annually and this
increases every year. But we can have the capacity to be self-sufficient for
about 40 to 50 percent of our needs," he said.
