Dubai beaches get international quality mark of the "Blue Flag" programme

Dubai, June 24, 2013 (WAM) - Dubai Municipality and Environmental Centre for Arab Towns have jointly launched the Blue Flag Programme of the Foundation of Environmental Education to ensure the safety and cleanliness of beaches in the Emirate of Dubai. Eng. Mohamed Al Noori, Director of Corporate Marketing and Relations Department, presented the programme at the 100th meeting of the Technical Committee of the civic body. "The Blue Flag Program is the international quality mark awarded by which beach users can ensure that the marina or the beach adheres to the highest global standards. To get this flag, beaches should comply with 32 standards under four main categories, namely: water quality, environmental education information, eco-friendly management and safety '&' services," Noori said. "The Jumairah and Mamzar beaches are already certified by FEE and are flying the Blue Flag. Other beaches in Dubai are in the process of registration under the Blue Flag Programme and hopefully will have the flag soon," he said. "The programme contributes to the sustainable development of the beach and waterfront projects, as well as the protection of marine environment and public health. It encourages the community to participate and maintain beaches and marinas, raising the level of awareness of environmental issues," he said. "It also promotes joint action and cooperation with various sectors to share responsibility to protect environmentally sensitive marine areas. Moreover, the programme increases the chances of sustainable environmental development, the concept of eco-tourism and attracting more tourists to the country, highlighting what we are doing to protect the environment," he explained. More than 3,450 beaches in 60 countries have been granted the Blue Flag since its inception in 1987. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
